About 30km outside of Budapest lies Etyek, a beautiful rustic community home to some of the most excellent wines in all of the country. If you are around Budapest in early September, this is the best time to visit Etyek as this is when they hold their annual Autumn Picnic, consisting of various delicious foods and wines.
To get to Etyek, the bus line 760 from Budapest Kelenföld (southwest end of the green metro line) will take you to Etyek in under 1 hour.
There is no entrance fee to the Etyek Autumn Picnic but you should by the festival wine glass for 1000 fornit (about $3.50) to use for sipping and tasting. While tasting the wines is free, you do have to pay for each glass of wine.
There are several stands along the main road where you can sample and buy traditional Hungarian dishes, cheese, honey, jam, dried fruit, pálinka (traditional Hungarian alcohol), wine (of course) and more.
Make sure to bring friends along with you if you choose to make a trip to the Etyek Autumn Picnic. While the weather may be warm, there are several areas in the shade to enjoy your wine and good company, many with great views overlooking the vineyards as well.
